The 66-year-old former ‘Grand Tour’ presenter broke down in tears during a heartbreaking scene in which he was forced to say goodbye to the majority of his prized pigs at Diddly Squat Farm.The first four episodes of the new series were released on a streaming platform on Wednesday, with the show continuing to document Clarkson’s attempts to run his 1,000-acre holding near Chipping Norton in the Cotswolds.
Why Jeremy Clarkson had to send his pigs away
The emotional scenes centred on the realisation that Clarkson’s pig herd was simply not making financial sense. A butcher warned him that the animals were not yielding enough meat to justify the costs, leaving him with little option but to let the majority of them go.“I love the pigs, I have absolutely… I have just been delighted every day I’m down there,” Clarkson told land agent Mr Ireland. “They make my heart sing, I’m so happy. But we are running a business here, and they make no financial sense at all.”He acknowledged the decision was inevitable. “I had known there was only one option,” he admitted. The situation was made even more difficult by the fact that the latest group included one of the original sows he and girlfriend Lisa Hogan had purchased three years earlier. “It was even harder to say goodbye to the next group,” he said.When Kaleb Cooper tried to reassure him by saying it was “for the better good,” Clarkson’s response was simple and raw. “It’s still f****** sad,” he replied.
The emotional farewell
As Clarkson and Lisa said their goodbyes to the pigs, the moment became too much for him. With his back to the camera, he put his face in his hands and rubbed his eyes. Lisa came over to comfort him, giving him a hug and stroking his head as he held her tightly and cried.Not all of the pigs were sent to the abattoir, however. Two of them, named Clumsy and Swizz, were instead rehomed at an educational farm. “I couldn’t really have handled it if they’d gone off to be eaten,” Clarkson said of the pair.The first four episodes of series five of ‘Clarkson’s Farm’ are now available to stream.
