The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has approached the Delhi Police over a series of cyber attacks targeting its Post-Result Services Portal, a platform used by Class 12 students to apply for services such as verification of marks, photocopies of evaluated answer sheets and re-evaluation.In a press release issued on June 5, the board said it had lodged a formal complaint with the Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) Unit of Delhi Police, seeking an investigation into what it described as coordinated cyber attacks aimed at disrupting the portal’s functioning.The development comes just days after the portal was launched on June 2, shortly after the declaration of board examination results.
Portal used for post-result services came under attack
According to CBSE, the portal was subjected to repeated cyber attacks over the past three days. The board said the attacks involved large volumes of malicious internet traffic originating from multiple Internet Protocol (IP) addresses within India and abroad.The portal caters to lakhs of students seeking post-result services. Any disruption, the board noted, has the potential to affect a large number of users during a period when students are applying for admissions and pursuing result-related processes.In the press release, CBSE said the attacks appeared to be aimed at destabilising the platform, preventing legitimate users from accessing services and attempting unauthorised extraction of information.“The apparent objective of the attackers appeared to destabilize the platform, deny access to legitimate users, and attempt unauthorized extraction of information,” the board said.
CBSE says systems remain secure
While seeking police intervention, CBSE maintained that its systems and databases were not compromised.“It is emphasized that despite these malicious attempts, CBSE’s systems and databases remain secure and uncompromised. No data breach or unauthorized access has been detected,” the board said in the release.The board said it has requested the IFSO Unit to conduct a detailed investigation and take appropriate legal action against those responsible.The statement also underlined the wider implications of such attacks, noting that disruptions to the portal could create inconvenience for students and parents relying on post-result services.
Round-the-clock monitoring helped contain attacks
CBSE said the attacks were mitigated through continuous monitoring and response mechanisms.According to the board, cybersecurity teams from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Digital India Corporation, Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), Computer Emergency Response Team-India (CERT-In), and other central government agencies assisted in responding to the attacks.“The attacks were successfully mitigated through continuous, 24×7 monitoring and response mechanisms,” the board said.The board also acknowledged the support provided by these agencies and institutions in ensuring that the portal remained operational despite the attempted disruptions.
Investigation likely to focus on source of attacks
With the complaint now before the Delhi Police’s specialised cyber unit, the focus is likely to shift to identifying the origin of the malicious traffic and determining whether the attacks were coordinated from multiple locations.For now, CBSE has maintained that student data remains safe and that post-result services continue to be available through the portal, even as authorities begin examining the incident.
